Absorber Plate Temperature

The absorber temperature is measured using a thermistor attached to the outside of the absorber. The thermistor used is a 4-wired PT-100 element.

It is attached to the absorber using a two-component highly conductive epoxy, referred to as Stycast®. It is important that the epoxy is conductive, in order for the PT-100 to accurately measure the absorber temperature.

Cover Plate Temperature

The cover plate temperature is measured using a thermistor fitted in a polycarbonate housing which is attached to the outside of the cover plate. The thermistor used is a 4-wired PT-100 element.

The housing of the thermistor is covered in aluminium foil in order to prevent direct heating from the sun.

Transer Fluid Temperature

The in- and outlet-temperature of the heat transfer fluid entering and exiting the absorber are measured using a thermistor which is screwed in a PVC-unit that connects the tubing to the inlet and outlet of the absorber. The thermistor used is a 2-wired PT-100 element fitted in a metal housing.

The difference between the in- and outlet temperature, together with the measurement of the water flow (i.e. the amount of water that is being heated), is a measure of the total energy that the collector produces.

Configuration 3

The experimental setup consists of 3 different collector configurations. The 3 configurations differ from each other in a geometric profile integrated within the cover plate. The purpose of these configurations is to test their behaviour in relation to overheating of the absorber, during long periods of extreme solar radiation.

The 3rd configuration is a benchmark setup and has no profile integrated within the cover plate.

Configuration 2

The experimental setup consists of 3 different collector configurations. The 3 configurations differ from each other in a geometric profile integrated in the cover plate. The purpose of these configurations is to test their behaviour in relation to overheating of the absorber during long periods of extreme solar radiation.

The 2nd configuration is equipped with two prismatic profiles as the cover plate. These prisms serve as reflectors of sunlight when the sun is directly overhead.
